Hindus attach a great deal of importance to Marriage. The ceremonies are very colourful and celebrations may extend for several days. There are many rituals to be performed before wedding,at wedding and after wedding. But many of us don’t know the scientific reasons behind some of the rituals that are performed at wedding. As centuries are passing by and increasing technology people are very busy that they have no time to understand the actual reasons behind rituals but simply follow them. Here are some of the examples:

● Reason behind applying Mehendi for hands and feet: Besides lending color to the hands, mehndi is a very powerful medicinal herb.As the wedding day approaches, the excitement mixed with nervous anticipation can take its toll on the bride and groom. Application of mehndi can prevent too much stress because it cools the body and keeps the nerves from becoming tense.

● Reason behind Indian women wearing Toe Ring: Wearing toe rings is significant for married women. But there is also science in it. Usually the toe rings are made of Silver. As Silver is a good conductor, it absorbs polar energies from the earth and passes it to the body. And normally toe rings are worn on the second toe. A particular nerve from the second toe connects the uterus and passes to heart. Wearing toe ring on this finger strengthens the uterus. It will keep it healthy by regulating the blood flow to it and menstrual cycle will be regularized.

● Reason behind applying Tilak/Kumkum on the Forehead: On the forehead, between the two eyebrows, is a spot that is considered as a major nerve point in human body since ancient times. The Tilak is believed to prevent the loss of “energy”, the red ‘kumkum’ between the eyebrows is said to retain energy in the human body and control the various levels of concentration.

These are some of the scientific reasons behind some of the Hindu rituals which I feel everybody should know before following. Though there may be other reasons behind these rituals proposed by our ancestors, the scientific reasons are here which proves that these rituals are helpful in leading a healthy life.
